Kenyan Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross Tracing Capabilities

Due to the large number of displaced people in Kenya following the election violence, the Kenyan Red Cross with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross has set up tracing systems to help reconnect families that have lost contact.

Current Actions

The Kenyan Red Cross, with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross has deployed tracing teams to the affected areas. Tracing teams are able to assist families that have lost contact with immediate family in Kenya in two ways:

***First Families need to try and contact their relatives using the following hotline numbers:

      Affected Area Hotline number
      Bungoma (including Mt. Elgon) 011-254-720-751-815
      Eldoret (Rift Valley) 011-254-727-033-922
      Kisumu (Nyanza) 011-254-720-998-321
      Mombasa (Coast) 011-254-723-512-350
      Nairobi area 011-254-720-550-581
      Nakuru area 011-254-724-137-097

If families in the United States have not received a response using the hotline numbers within 1 week they can:

***Second Families can send an International Disaster Welfare Inquiry, IF they meet ALL of the following conditions

  • Relatives in the US are trying to contact IMMEDIATE family:
    • Parents
    • Siblings
    • Children
    • Spouses/fiancés
    • Grandparents
    • Legal guardians
  • Relatives in the US were in regular contact with the family member living in the affected areas before the violence began in Dec 2007
  • The family member they are trying to contact is not a US resident
    • If they are a US citizen they need to contact the US Department of State 1-888-407-4747
  • The inquirer has already tried to contact the sought person by all normal means

If a family member living in the US meets all of this criteria above they should contact their local American Red Cross office (it can be found at < http://www.redcross.org/ > and entering your zip code).  For inquiries in the Houston Area please contact Sarah Howell at 713-313-1635 (direct) or 713-526-8300 (main).
