Sevens squad pride of Kenya

Kenya is confident of doing well in the next leg of the IRB Sevens in Hong Kong and Japan next month.

Kenya captain Sidney Ashioya said experienced players lifted morale in the team in the past two legs – in Wellington and Las Vegas – where they won Bowl and Plate, respectively.

Ashioya spoke in London on Wednesday night when the team made a stopover en route to Nairobi. They returned home on Thursday.

The skipper said there was a lot more to play for in the remaining legs.

He observed: “The technical bench came up with a new plan and we are happy it worked.

Maintain consistency

“We are also glad that we were given an oppportunity to express our ideas.”

Ashioya said that the team will be seeking to maintain the same tempo in Hong Kong and Japan.

“Every time we go to a tournament we always try to win the Main Cup; it’s a realistic target,” said Ashioya. “We want to collect more points in the remaining legs.

“We lost only three out of 12 matches and that is what we want to work on. We want to win four to five of our matches or six.

“These are realistic targets.”

The team match analyst, Felix “Toti” Ochieng’, said cohesion between the players and the technical committee yielded fruit.

“The players ‘took ownership of the team’ as the mixture of old and young blended well,” Ochieng’ said.

He added that the technical committee played its role well by analysing our opponents’ style before coming up with tactics.
