Think safety in the sun

The summer months offer long days to enjoy hours of outdoor fun. And while the sun can make you feel energized and cheerful, its rays can cause a lot of harm if you're not careful.

Keep these important tips in mind:

  • Use sunscreen – Choose an SPF of at least 30, re-apply often, and make sure to use a waterproof version if you're swimming.
  • Take precautions when you exercise – Stay well hydrated and stop if you become overheated during a workout. Carry water with you and try to find shade whenever possible. Scheduling your exercise for early mornings or when the sun is setting may help, too.
  • Care for your eyes – Wear sunglasses that provide 99%-100% UV protection. This ensures that the glasses block both forms of UV radiation.
  • Be careful with alcohol – Drinking alcohol while in the sun for long periods of time can dehydrate your body faster and make you susceptible to sunstroke.
  • Check your skin regularly – Look for changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of birthmarks, moles, and spots. If you find any changes or find sores that are not healing, see your doctor.

Remember, sun safety isn't just for vacation. Take precautions each and every day to ensure your good health.
